Mass Soccer represented well in USASA National Cups

Several Mass Soccer affiliated clubs showcased their talent and commitment in United States Amateur Soccer Association (USASA) national cup competitions this past spring. Mass Soccer is massively proud the accomplishments of Southie FC, Kendall Wanderers and Safira Soccer Club for their national cup runs in the following tournaments:

U.S. Amateur Cup

  • Southie FC (MSSL), co-founded by Sean Bakhtiari and Roy Sandeman in 2012, advanced to the USASA Region I semifinal match in Yonkers, NY against Landsdowne Bhoys of Eastern New York. Southie’s journey to the Region I semifinal was paved with wins over Trenton Rebels (NJ), Tarrafal FC (MA), and GPS Omens (MA). NY powerhouse Lansdowne Bhoys however proved to be too much on the road for "The Boys in Neon". Southie FC winger Brian Grissel gave his side a 1-0 lead late in the first half but that lead was short-lived when Lansdowne converted a penalty right before halftime. Three more goals in the last 15 minutes of the secdon half put the scoreline at 4-1 and ended Southie's national cup run.

Werner Fricker Open Cup

  • Kendall Wanderers FC (BSSL) is one of the oldest amateur soccer clubs in Massachusetts and showcased Mass Soccer's quality on a national stage by progressing to the semifinal round of the 2016 USASA Werner Fricker Open Cup. Like Southie, Kendall found themselves with a 1-0 lead on the road against FC Motown of New Jersey thanks to a Robbie Sabadoz strike. With the game in the balance, both teams had good chances to get the winner but, unfortunately for Kendall, it was FC Motown who got the decisive third goal to progress to the Region 1 final despite Kendall coming very close to a late equalizer. Kendall's path to the semis included a 1-0 win over FSA Inter of Connecticut 1-0 and a 2-0 victory of New England Luso-American Soccer Assoctiation (NELASA) side Juventus USA.

Gerhard Mengel O-30 Cup

  • Safira FC (OTHSL) was founded in 2008 and is one of the most decorated clubs in Mass Soccer. They've won six consecutive USFF Northeast Regional Futsal Championships and three USFF National Championships. This past spring, Safira advanced all the way to the 2016 Gerhard Mengel O-30 Cup final in Horsham, PA by defeating Danbury United (CT) 2-0 in the semifinals and NY Dinamo (ENY) 4-1 in the quarterfinals. Unfortunately, Safira fell just short of winning the Region I final losing 1-0 to Phoenix Sports Club (EPA).

Veteran's Cup

  • In addition to the USASA National Cups above, ten Mass Soccer teams will be traveling to compete in the annual Veteran's Cup, also known as the Adult Soccer Fest. This year's competition takes place in Denver, CO from July 13-17 and offers divisions taylored to all ages and levels. Good luck to the following Mass Soccer clubs!
    • Mass Spirit (Woman's O30 Division)
    • Mass Spirit Seasoned (Woman's O40)
    • Mass Spirit Elite 50 (Woman's O50)
    • Breakers (Woman's O50)
    • Breakers O55's (Woman's O55)
    • Bay State Breakers O-60's (Woman's O60)
    • Breakers O65 (Woman's O65)
    • Massachusetts United (Men's O55)
    • NEOTHSL +65 (Men's O65)
    • NEOTHSL 70's (Men's O70)
