U.S. Open Cup: Southie FC gain national attention with 2016 U.S. Open Cup run

2016 is a year to be proud of for South Boston's amateur outfit, Southie FC. In addition to their success in the USASA National Amateur Cup, the Boys in Neon made waves in the second oldest soccer tournament in the world - the U.S. Open Cup - a competition that allows 12 qualified amateur teams nationwide to play a single elimination competition against semiprofessional and professional clubs from MLS, NASL, USL, PDL and NPSL. Southie FC secured a first round 2-0 upset win over PDL's Seacoast United Phantoms which granted them a spot in the second round of the Cup. The draw however, had them playing a midweek game in Rochester, NY against professional team and reigning USL National Champions Rochester Rhinos. Unfortunately, a second upset in seven days was not in the cards for Southie. In the end, they lost 7-0 to Rochester. The Rhinos went on to win their 3rd round game before losing 1-0 the the NY Red Bulls in the U.S. Open Cup fourth round. Currently, sixteen teams remain in the U.S. Open Cup. Today could have been close. I thought they deserved credit. In the second half – the game was 5-0 – but they played more in our half. They wanted to score. They were pretty committed to scoring.”
