USASA Region I Recap

The two time reigning state and USASA Region I champions, Sidekicks FC, traveled to the Ukranian American Sports Center for the third year in a row only to come up short of a third regional title.

The Sidekicks FC are a Boston area futsal/soccer team.  They play in the top division of the Eastern Mass Women's Soccer Leage (EMWSL) in the spring, summer, and fall. During the winter, they play in the Mass Futsal League. They enter at least one team in the women's division plus often a women's team in the coed division and a coed team in the men's group.  They also host weekly practices throughout the year which they open up to all who want to participate. They are organized by Herbie Berger-Hershkowitz and Eddie Molina. They are led both on and off the pitch/court by captain, Rose Frank.

This year, in the State Cup, the Sidekicks defeated EMWSL D1 rival, Greater Boston Kickbacks, by a score of 2-0. This earned them the opportunity to represent Massachusetts in the USASA Region I championship for the third year in a row.

In regionals, first they played Eastern Pennsylvania (EPA) representative, HVAA Pride.  This was a very evenly matched game, however it was the Pride that was able to net one right before the half.  In the 42 minute, Pride intercepted a ball in the midfield sent it over the top down the right wing.  Pride winger served a beautiful centering pass to a crashing striker and scored on a single one touch shot.  The game remained locked 0-1 for the remainder of the game.

In the Sidekick's second match, they faced the team that they defeated in the first regional championship two years ago, the Western New York (WNY) representative, Rochester Lazers.  In the 2021 regional tournament, these two teams emmerged from their groups as the top teams and played in the finals. In their first meeting, the Sidekicks defeated Rochester 3-2.

Rochester came into this tournament talking about the history of the 2021 match and were glad to get a second chance at defeating the Sidekicks.

This rematch was dominated by Rochester. Sidekicks traveled with a short bench and also sustain a key injury in the first game with the Pride, losing their outside wing, Carina to an ankle injury.

Rochester scored two goals by the 30th minute, which served to be too much of a deficit to overcome. Rochester's third and fourth goals were on PKs. With the 4-0 win, Rochester advanced the finals to play HVAA Pride.

Rochester and the Pride played the next morning and Rochester emerged victorious with a 1-0 win.  Rochester continued on to the USASA National Final Four in Quad Cities, IO on August 5-6th.  They won their semifinal match, however lost to North Texas Image in the national final game.

Huge thanks to Sidekicks FC - not just for representing us this year, but for representing us and the region for the past two years.  They have traveled to nationals twice. In 2021, they traveled to Detriot and finished second and in 2022 they traveled to Nashville< TN and finished 4th.

The USASA Women's Amateur Cup had been on hiatus for 10+ years. Without the Sidekicks efforts traveling and promoting women's soccer, we could not have returned the Women's Amateur Cup to the national stage.

Thank you, Sidekicks FC!
