WORLD CUP TO OPEN CUP: THE WILD, WINDING ROAD OF BROCKTON’S WUILITO FERNANDES

FRANK DELL’APA WALKS US THROUGH HOW FORMER PRO WUILITO FERNANDES WENT FROM WORLD CUP QUALIFYING FOR HIS NATIVE CAPE VERDE TO THIS YEAR’S U.S. OPEN CUP WITH MASSACHUSETTS AMATEURS BROCKTON FC UNITED.

Wuilito Fernandes figured his career was over after a serious knee injury in 2018. But five years later, he’s back in action with Brockton United FC in the United Premier Soccer League (UPSL), picking up where he left off after playing in both the USL Championship and, globally, in FIFA World Cup qualifiers for Cape Verde’s national team.

Fernandes, 33, may have lost a step, but he remains a scoring threat – his back-post finish of a Stephan Teixeira cross gave Brockton a 3-2 come-from-behind win over CD Faialense in the Third Qualifying Round of the 2024 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup in October – and he contributed again in the decisive 3-1 win on the road against three-time Open Cup champions the NY Pancyprian Freedoms.

Valent effort put forth by CD Faialense in their first Open Cup appearance.  Brockton FC advances to the 4th and final round of the qualifier.

Second Round Recap: Boston Street vs CD Faialense

CD Faialense played Boston Street in the Lamar Hunt qualifying round Sunday, October 7th at the Harry Della Russo Stadium in Revere, MA. The crowd and announcers were enthusiastic supporting the local teams and it was clear from the outset this would be a well-balanced match. Boston Street opened the scoring just 7 minutes into the game with a shot from a few yards outside the box. The play then remained back and forth until half time, with the teams going into the break at 1-0, Boston Street leading.

Following half time, Boston Street came on strong having three scoring attempts within the first 20 minutes. Then, with 15 minutes remaining, the CD Faialense team changed their formation to press harder going forward. Their efforts were rewarded when #18 Paul Mayer scored the equalizer in the first minute of stoppage time. The opportunity came off of a drive down the flank and a cross just ahead of the opposing keeper's reach. The mere minutes left in stoppage time following CD Faialense's goal were not enough for Boston Street to again take the lead, and the game went into overtime.

The two fifteen minute periods of overtime were fraught with activity. CD Faialense took an early lead with a goal by Paul Magazzu in the 105 minute. This goal was followed by numerous counterattacks by both teams that left the 2-1 scoreline in question. Not to be outdone, Boston Street scored with only one minute of overtime remaining again equalizing the scoreline 2-2 and sending the game into penalty kicks.

Ultimately, Boston Street secured the win, outscoring Boston Street on penalty kicks 4-2  and advancing to the next round.

CD Faialense will host Brockton FC United at Miller Field in Winthrop on October 21st at 10am.
