The 2025 Amateur Cup State Final came down to the Loco Gunners of the Bay State Soccer League (BSSL) vs South Coast Union of the American Premier Soccer League (APSL).
Both clubs captured league titles this fall, so both could arguably stake claims they were the best amateur team in Massachusetts.
The Loco Gunners took early control of the 2025 BSSL season, topping the table in late spring and never looking back. They locked up the highly coveted D1 title in early November.
South Coast Union (SCU) was crowned the APSL New England Cup Champions on October 25th. They also defeated the BSSL McKenzie Cup Champions, Atletico Boston, on their way to this state final. This set the stage for a highly anticipated matchup between these two teams, who also had never previously played each other.
In the first 20 minutes of the match, SCU was successful in putting pressure in their attacking third, creating several scoring opportunities. However, stellar keeping by the Gunners' Luke Citriniti kept them scoreless.
Loco Gunners scored their first goal in the 30' when the two Davock brothers connected on a corner. Trevor served up a well-placed ball on the back post and Aidan headed it in.
At halftime the score was 1-nil advantage Loco Gunners. In the 60', things changed quickly. Gunners' Justin Freitas netted 3 quick goals off counter attacks, capitalizing on the SCU high line. Freitas' hat trick was assisted by Aidan Davock, Kevin Casteneda, and Trevor Davock.
In the 87', SCU kept Citriniti from turning in a clean sheet on a counter. Michael Garcia sent a perfect cross to Joseph Paiva, who headed it in.
Loco Gunners were crowned the state champions with the 4-1 victory. They will represent Massachusetts and advance to the national rounds of the USASA Region I competition in April.

Opening Round USASA Region I Results:
It was a long journey to the 2023 State Amateur Cup Final for the Providence City Rogues. This quest first began when the Rouges won the 2022 Ocean Soccer State League Cup thus earning them a bid into the 2023 Mass Soccer Champions Cup Tournament.
In this summer's Champions Cup Tournament, the Rogues battled their way through tough competition as they faced off and defeated the other 2022-2023 League and Cup Champions in the state, defeating Boa Vista (Torres FC) in the final match by a score of 4-2.
This title earned them passage and the #1 seed in the 2023 Mass Soccer Amateur Cup. In the quarterfinal round, they defeated Safira, then upset BSSL division 1 side, CD Faialense in the semifinals, and in the state final faced Sete de Setembro, a tough opponent from the Eastern Premier Soccer League (regional league). The Rogues prevailed in this match by a score of 2-1 earning them their second state title of the year.
Providence City becomes only the second team to capture both the Champions Cup and Amateur Cup titles in the same year. This was first accomplished by FC Omens last year.
Providence City will advance to USASA Amateur Cup Region I competition in April. 2024 marks the historic 100th anniversary of this prestigious National Cup. Due to the participation levels and high quality of teams in Massachusetts, we were given a second entry into Amateur Cup regionals. Our state runner-up, Sete de Setembro, will also be joining Providence City in the next round of this tournament.
The winner of Region I will advance to play the champions of the other four regions on July 25-28th in DeKalb, Illinois. Click here for more information on the 2024 USASA National Amateur Cup
