2019 Brockton FC Champions

2019-2020 State Qualifying Tournament

GPS Omens vs Brockton FC United

After delays due to weather in late 2019 and delays due to COVID in early 2020, the long awaited Amateur Cup State Final took place at Hormel Stadium in Medford, MA on September 20, 2020. With clear skies and cooler temperatures, it was a perfect day for soccer and the game was well worth the wait.

Brockton FC United, winners of the Qualifying Tournament, took the field against GPS Omens, winners of the 2019 Champions' Cup. The winner of this game would determine the 2019/2020 Massachusetts representative in the 2021 Regional Amateur Cup tournament.

The first portion of the half went back and forth with both sides making valiant efforts at net and solid defense throughout. Twenty-six minutes into the match, Brockton was first to strike. The outside midfielder made a sprint down the left side of the field and slid a grounded cross to the middle. Ronaldinho put a pass with the inside of his left foot into the bottom left of the net, and Brockton FC was up 1-0.

Not long after, GPS made a brilliant attempt at goal. It began with a cross by Jake Edwards (#8) from the far right of the field and a one-time volley by a teammate in the left of the 18 yard box to the upper left 90 of the Brockton net. It took an amazing save by the Brockton keeper to keep GPS from scoring.

Going into half time, it was 1-0 Brockton. As teams regrouped and took to their benches, it was obvious by the effort and attitudes of both sides that this game was far from over. More excellent demonstrations of skill and experience were sure to come.

Sure enough, not 8 minutes into the 2nd half, Callum Cobb (#23) from GPS equalized on a deflected strike from distance started by a long throw in from Jake Edwards.

The game was level, 1-1. Both sides continued with aggressive and skillful play, unrelenting in their efforts and desire to represent their home state in the regionals. As time passed and with fatigue set in, both teams made a push towards their respective goals.

With only minutes in the game remaining, Brockton's #7 made a pass from the center of midfield to the outside left and a long ball into the GPS box followed. This ball was headed by Brockton's Edmilson (#11) into the upper left side of the GPS net.

The score was 2-1 with Brockton in the lead. As the clock counted down, GPS had a few more opportunities to again tie the game, but was unable to capitalize. As a result, when the whistle blew to end the game, the final score was 2-1.
