The United States Adult Soccer Association [USASA] is raising the fees they charge for adult players. For some time, Massachusetts has been paying an annual registration fee of $8 on behalf of every player to USASA. In other words, when you paid your $25 registration to Mass Soccer every two years, $16 of that went directly to USASA. Effective with the 2018 registration year, that fee will increase to $9/year, or $18 bi-annually.
Fortunately Mass Soccer carries a healthy reserve amount on hand, so for the time being we expect to just absorb the fee increase without any extra cost to the players themselves. As we seek to offer more services and support for our member leagues, and depending on many other factors that could influence the budget, this may change. Our Executive Board is already discussing ways to keep costs down as we work to set the direction for the next several years to come. The financial health of our organization remains our top priority.
The romance of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup hinges on the little guys taking on the pros; part-time amateurs getting the chance to compete 11v11 against full-time paid professionals. Mass Soccer's very own GPS Omen's of the Bay State Soccer League, led by Harris Smriko, Greg Zuboff and Jake Edwards, advanced to the third round of the competition. They defeated two semi-pro clubs along the way before narrowly falling 2-1 in the final seconds on the road to professional side Rochester Rhinos of the USL. Click here to read more

U.S. Soccer recently announced the "local 2018 U.S. Open Cup qualifying" draw with a record-high 108 amateur teams having entered local qualifying for the 2018 edition, smashing the previous record of 64 teams set last year (an increase in teams of 69% year-over-year). Even though the tournament does not begin until April 2018, nearly all of the 108 entrants will see action in the first qualifying round, set for September 23-24. The history-filled annual tournament, entering its 105th year, is perhaps the only high-profile competition in American team sports where amateur sides, should they advance far enough, have the opportunity to face professionals in meaningful competition.
