Newletter #7: May 2018

Newletter #7: May 2018

A word from the Mass Soccer president, Andy Weiss:

"Does the game go on without us?

For the month of April I had an opportunity to take an extended vacation for the first time in....well as long as I can remember. Besides arranging the time off from work and planning for the trip itself, the brief worry crossed my mind that I would be neglecting my soccer obligations. Then I remembered the stellar team of people around me:

  • Liz McQuilkin is our Operations Manager and handles just about anything that is thrown her way, always with a smile that does not quit.
  • Debbie Forte is our Registrar and is currently moving a mountain of people through our system with seamless efficiency.
  • JP Musanda and Kevin Griffith are running the largest ever field of teams competing for the National Cups.
  • Paul Athanasiadis is our State Games Assignor and will make sure those games all have good referees.
  • Moulay Ridaoui is our Treasurer and is working to prepare our budget reports.
  • Nadia Sussman is our Secretary and has successfully organized and recorded another Mass Soccer Annual General Meeting.
  • Garrett Solomon is our VP and Disciplinary Chair, and is already at work resolving some misconduct issues that came in.
  • Jessica Berry is our Legal Counsel and is researching to make sure we are in compliance with new child safety statutes.
  • Jeremy Mordkoff is our web developer and continues to make behind the scene changes that make all our lives easier.

And there are more. From the organization that produces the passcards, the accountant preparing the tax returns, our coaching department, the apparel company, and even the person putting together this newsletter. All this is going on while I took the month to goof off. There is a very large and very capable team of people supporting Mass Soccer and for that we owe them a debt of thanks.

It is easy for us to think we are indispensable to the game, but the truth is that good people are all around us!

USASA Gerhard Mengel Cup: Warehouse Gunners defeat Polonia Wallington SC to advance to Region I semis

Mass Soccer's Warehouse Gunners are one of seven USASA Region I teams competing in the 2018 Gerhard Mengel Cup. The competition is USASA's O30 cup tournament, it dates back to 1984 and is named after Gerhard Mengel, a former National Cup Commissioner.

On Sunday, April 29 the Warehouse Gunners defeated New Jersey's Polonia Wallington SC in a tight quarterfinal match. Both of Gunner's goals were scored by Marty Galvin who first struck in the 24th minute and later in the 65th minute. Polonia made things interesting when they netted a neat header off a corner kick with 15 minutes remaining. However, the Gunners stood strong and held on to a 2-1 victory to book a ticket into the semifinals on May 20th where they will travel to the winner of Pancyprian Freedoms (NY) vs. Danbury United (CT).  Click here to read more...

One-on-one conversation with Safira FC manager Andre Ferreira

Can you tell us a little bit about yourself and how/why Safira FC established? - "I was born in Brazil and I am 36 years old. I have resided in the Boston area since 2000. Safira FC was established in 2007 by a group of friends trying to play in Boston's Brazilian Soccer League."

What Safira FC accomplishment are you most proud of? - "In 2008 we entered into our first ever futsal tournament in Baltimore, MD but didn't perform so well. In 2009 we entered again and won the Region I and National titles. To date, Safira FC have won 8 regional futsal titles and 4 national futsal titles. The Safira FC accomplishment that I am most proud of is our 4 national futsal titles."

What is it about soccer that’s so special to you and the Safira FC family? - "Soccer is our passion, it runs in our blood since we were kids. It is what has kept us away from many difficult times and it is genuinely what has made us who we are today."
